What is the difference between a funeral director and a funeral celebrant?

The different roles of directors and celebrants

As your funeral celebrant, I will help you to coordinate and conduct the funeral service. A funeral director will help you with the logistics and the legalities. They will, for example, care for the body of the person who has died. They will be able to offer you advice about aspects such as coffins and florists, provide a hearse and a driver, and help you with legalities such as the death certificate.

Many funeral companies have in-house celebrants or celebrants they regularly use and recommend. This might be the best option for you. However, you should know that you are free to choose your own celebrant whichever funeral director you choose. You can contact any funeral celebrant yourself or ask the funeral director to contact us on your behalf. I have written about the three key qualities of a funeral celebrant here.
